Monash CGPA Calculator

Compute semester GPA and updated cumulative GPA (CGPA) using Monash official 4.0 grade values.

First time calculating GPA? Start with the Monash GPA calculator. Compare with your Monash WAM calculator.

Prior Cumulative GPA

Enter your cumulative GPA and total credit points earned before this semester (from WES or transcript).

This semester (courses taken or planned)

Add units from the current teaching period. Semester GPA and updated cumulative GPA calculate together.

Mapped grade: D (GPA value 3)

Mapped grade: HD (GPA value 4)

Mapped grade: C (GPA value 2)

How CGPA Updates

New CGPA = (prior GPA × prior credits + this semester grade points) ÷ (prior credits + semester credits). Enter prior figures from WES at the start of the semester, then add planned or actual grades for current units.

What This Calculator Does

Updates your cumulative GPA after adding a new semester. Enter prior CGPA, completed credit points, then this semester's units. Outputs semester GPA and new CGPA using Monash official grade values.

How the Calculation Works

Semester GPA = Σ(grade point × cp) ÷ semester cp. New CGPA = (prior CGPA × prior cp + semester GPA × semester cp) ÷ (prior cp + semester cp).

Large prior cp dampens semester swings — a HD semester after 144 cp moves CGPA less than after 48 cp.

When Students Should Use This Calculator

After each results release to track cumulative standing. Before scholarship renewal when CGPA minimums apply.

  • Post Semester 1 results with 96 cp already completed.
  • Modelling "what if I get all D this semester?" before exams.
  • International forms asking for cumulative GPA out of 4.0.

Step-by-Step Guide

Follow this workflow each time you use the tool so your inputs match WES or your unit guide.

  1. Note prior CGPA and completed cp from WES.
  2. Enter new semester units with grades and cp.
  3. Read semester GPA and updated CGPA.
  4. Compare to distinction average 3.0 threshold.
  5. Save snapshot after official results — not projections.

Practical Examples

Worked scenarios below use realistic Monash-style marks and credit loads. Enter the same values in the calculator to verify.

Strong semester lifts CGPA 2.75 → 2.90

Prior CGPA 2.75 on 96 cp. New semester HD+HD+D on 18 cp (SGPA 3.667). CGPA = (2.75×96 + 3.667×18)/114 ≈ 2.90.

Weak semester — CGPA drops slightly

CGPA 3.10 on 120 cp. Semester of all P (1.0) on 24 cp → new CGPA ≈ 2.93.

First year — CGPA equals semester GPA

No prior cp. Semester GPA 3.333 is also CGPA 3.333.

Fail in semester — N = 0.3 weighting

D+D+N on 18 cp: semester GPA ≈ 2.2. Prior 3.0 CGPA on 72 cp falls to ≈ 2.85.

Path to distinction average CGPA 3.0

CGPA 2.88 on 108 cp, need 3.0. Requires ~3.6+ semester GPA on 24 cp — achievable with HD-heavy semester.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Using WAM instead of GPA in prior CGPA field.
  • Double-counting in-progress units as completed.
  • Forgetting fail = 0.3 not 0.0.
  • Projecting CGPA before results are official on WES.

Tips to Improve Academic Performance

  • Update after every results release.
  • Use target GPA calculator for next semester goal setting.
  • Malaysia campus: confirm local reporting with faculty.

Important Notes About Monash University Policies

Repeated units and withdrawn fails may adjust official CGPA differently — export academic record when precision matters.

What Is CGPA at Monash?

Cumulative GPA (CGPA) combines your GPA from completed study with new semester results, weighted by credit points. It answers: "What is my overall GPA after this teaching period?" — useful after each results release.

Enter your prior CGPA and completed credit points, then add this semester's units by grade or mark. The calculator computes semester GPA and updated cumulative GPA using Monash official grade values.

Worked Example

Suppose your CGPA is 2.75 after 96 credit points. This semester you complete three 6-credit units at HD, HD, and D. Semester GPA = (4.0×6 + 4.0×6 + 3.0×6) ÷ 18 = 3.667. New CGPA = (2.75×96 + 3.667×18) ÷ 114 ≈ 2.90. CGPA moves slowly when many credit points are already behind you.

CGPA Planning Tips

  • Update after every official results release.
  • Use target GPA calculator for next-semester goals.
  • Cross-check with WAM when faculties reference distinction average.
  • Malaysia campus students should confirm local reporting rules with Monash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CGPA at Monash?

CGPA (cumulative GPA) is your overall GPA across all completed semesters, weighted by credit points. It updates each time new results are certified.

Where do I find my prior cumulative GPA?

Check WES, the Student Portal GPA/WAM widget, or your unofficial academic record. Enter that GPA and total credits earned before this semester.

How is semester GPA different from CGPA?

Semester GPA (SGPA) uses only the units you enter for the current teaching period. CGPA combines prior cumulative results with this semester.

Is CGPA the same as WAM?

No. CGPA uses letter-grade point values on a 4.0 scale. WAM uses percentage marks with Monash year-level weighting. Both appear on transcripts for many courses.

Can Malaysia students use this for resume CGPA?

This estimates CGPA using Monash grade values. For official resume letters, request documented CGPA from Monash Connect or Student Services Malaysia.

Does this include failed units?

Yes. Include failed grades (N = 0.3 GPA value) if they are part of your completed record — they affect both semester and cumulative GPA.
